Navigating the Atlas
You may browse the Atlas by following the curated "paths" of information and interpretation provided by the editors. These paths roughly track the movement of radioactive materials from the earth, into weapons or energy sources, and then into unmanageable waste—along with the environmental, social, technical, and ethical ramifications of these processes. In addition to the stages of the production process, you may view in sequence the positivist, technocratic version of this story, or the often hidden or repressed shadow side to the industrial processing of nuclear materials.

Peterson Air Force Base / Peterson Space Force Base (renamed 2021)
Built in 1942, Peterson Air Force Base is the home of multiple military operations. Since 1982, it has been the headquarters for the Air Force Space Command, which engages in space, intelligence, cyberwarfare, and intercontinental ballistic missile operations for the U.S. Army. In addition, it is the site of the 21st Space Wing—the only Air Force entity to provide worldwide space control and missile warnings. The majority of NORAD and USNORTHCOM operations take place at Peterson Air Force Base, and the Base provides extra runways for the City of Colorado Springs Municipal Airport as part of a civil-military airport agreement.
Following the establishment of the Space Force in 2021, various Air Force space wings and operations groups have been replaced with deltas and garrisons. The Peterson-Schriever Garrison became responsible for the administration of the Peterson Air Force Base, Schriever Air Force Base, Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station, Thule Air Base, New Boston Air Force Station, and Kaena Point Satellite Tracking Station, replacing the 50th Space Wing and 21st Space Wing. The Space Force's Space Operations Command now operates as the field command center for these sites, replacing Air Force Space Command headquarters. Peterson has been redesignated a Space Force Base.
